What Foxit is and where it fits

Foxit Software is a PDF-technology company that offers desktop software (PDF Editor, PDF Editor+), an SDK for embedding PDF functionality into custom applications, and an e-signature tool (Foxit eSign). It competes in the same space as Adobe Acrobat, Nitro PDF, Tungsten Power PDF or PDFelement: editing, converting, OCR and signing PDF documents, aimed at both individual users and businesses.

What day-to-day use is like

Foxit’s interface is organized similarly to Microsoft Office (a tabbed ribbon), which shortens the learning curve for anyone coming from Word or Excel. User reviews consistently highlight that the most common tasks — editing text, merging documents, adding comments, converting to Word or Excel — are handled directly without needing tutorials. OCR performs reasonably well on medium-to-high-quality scanned documents, though as with any OCR engine, accuracy drops with poor-quality scans or unusual fonts.

The mobile app (included only in PDF Editor+) lets you review, sign and comment on documents from your phone, though advanced text editing is still more comfortable on desktop.

Foxit includes password protection, permission controls (printing, copying, editing) and, on the higher-tier plans, AI-assisted smart redaction to detect and permanently remove sensitive data (card numbers, ID numbers, addresses) before sharing a document. Known security vulnerabilities (CVEs)

Like any widely used PDF editing software — a format that runs embedded JavaScript and processes untrusted source files by design — Foxit has been the subject of several vulnerability disclosures (CVEs) throughout 2026. Notable ones include two use-after-free bugs (CWE-416) in the JavaScript engine of Foxit PDF Editor and PDF Reader — triggered by deleting a page while an embedded script still accesses its properties, with a risk of crashes or even code execution in the process — several denial-of-service issues caused by mishandled modal dialogs or unhandled exceptions, and two stored XSS vulnerabilities in the cloud version (Foxit PDF Editor Cloud / pdfonline) in the file-upload and layer-creation features. There’s no indication that any of these were exploited at scale, and Foxit has documented and patched them as part of its regular update cycle. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind: keeping the app updated to the latest version isn’t optional for a PDF editor, precisely because of the type of content it processes.

Reviews on G2 and Capterra — which mostly reflect the product-usage experience — are also largely positive on support, mentioning a comprehensive help center and reasonably responsive chat and email channels. However, on consumer-complaint-focused platforms and in enterprise-level support threads, comments about subscription-renewal handling and longer-than-expected wait times show up more often: several users describe multi-day silences on critical tickets related to license activation, leaving the application unusable while they wait for a response. It’s worth putting this in perspective: someone with a smooth support experience rarely bothers to write a review about it, while someone stuck on an activation problem has a clear reason to, which probably overrepresents these cases relative to the real volume of customers who never run into issues. Even so, it’s a common enough pattern that it’s worth planning any renewal or license change with extra lead time in a business environment.

Foxit eSign vs. DocuSign: the real price comparison

Within the e-signature category, the price gap with the market leader is notable. Foxit eSign’s Business plan runs around $300/user/year and includes unlimited envelopes, compliance (HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, eIDAS) and 24/7 support with no extras to buy. DocuSign’s equivalent plan, Business Pro, costs around $480/user/year ($40/month) and caps sending at 100 envelopes per user per year, so exceeding that volume means negotiating a higher-tier plan. In exchange, DocuSign keeps an edge in automating more complex signing workflows and in third-party integrations, relevant for organizations with very sophisticated signing processes.

Foxit PDF Editor holds a rating of roughly 4.6 out of 5 on both G2 and Capterra. The most cited reason for choosing Foxit over Adobe is price: numerous reviews quantify savings of 40-60% versus Acrobat while keeping practically the same day-to-day functionality (editing, merging, text recognition). Ease of use and the features-to-price ratio are the most repeated points; the most common criticisms point to the initial learning curve around which plan includes which feature, and the occasional limitation versus Acrobat in very advanced document automation.

The PDF Editor plan starts at $10.99/month ($129.99/year) and includes full text and image editing, conversion to Office, OCR, password protection and 300 AI credits a month with 20 GB of cloud storage. PDF Editor+, the most subscribed plan, costs $13.99/month ($159.99/year) and adds mobile apps for iOS and Android, AI-assisted redaction and Foxit eSign with 150 envelopes a year.

For those who’d rather not depend on a subscription, there’s a perpetual license as a one-time payment (around $209.99 per user). Companies with 30 or more licenses can opt for volume licensing, with centralized management, a single purchase order and discounts of up to 30%. A standalone AI-assistant add-on ($49.99/year, 2,000 monthly credits) is available for anyone who needs more summarization and translation than the included allowance covers.
