Movistar Plus+ is Grupo Telefónica’s pay-TV platform, born from the merger of Movistar TV and Canal+. This audit treats the platform and its app as a digital product — catalog, interface, playback quality, compatible devices — not the operator as a telecommunications business.

What Movistar Plus+ is

It’s a pay-TV and streaming service combining live channels, on-demand content (movies, in-house and third-party series) and premium sports, available through its own set-top box, mobile apps, and smart TV and Android TV apps. It competes both with general streaming platforms (Netflix, Prime Video) and with pay-TV bundles from other operators.

Catalog: the strongest point

The breadth of the catalog is by far the most highly rated aspect by users themselves: new-release movies, in-house series, integrated third-party content and premium sports (with football as the main draw) all live in one service, avoiding the need to take out several separate subscriptions to access that combined content.

Mobile app and per-device experience: the weakest point

This is where the experience becomes uneven. App-store reviews are mixed: some users describe correct operation, with a good catalog and acceptable navigation, while others criticize picture quality and resolution compared with other entertainment apps. The harshest criticism concentrates on the Android TV version, which several users describe as a practically abandoned platform for long stretches, with uncorrected bugs and little attention paid by the operator to that specific version of the app.

This inconsistency between devices matters because it means the real experience depends heavily on how the user consumes the content: those using Movistar’s own set-top box tend to report greater stability than those accessing through the app on an Android TV set. It’s worth qualifying this: people with a bad experience are more likely to leave a review or open a support-forum thread than those with no issues, so these complaints likely over-represent the real incidence of the bug relative to the whole Android TV user base. Even so, the persistence of the problem across several updates — documented both in the Movistar community’s own forums and in specialized media — suggests it isn’t an isolated case, and as of this audit (September 2026) we report it honestly.

2026 development: end of support for older TVs

A significant 2026 development that reinforces the diagnosis of cross-device inconsistency: starting in April of that year, Movistar Plus+ stopped supporting the app on a specific list of older TVs and players, including LG and Samsung Smart TV models made between 2012 and 2015 (including three HD Ready LG models and the Samsung BD-K8500 and BD-KM85 Blu-Ray players), plus any Hisense TV running VIDAA versions earlier than 4.0 and, in general, any device that doesn’t reach Android TV 6.0. Affected users see an incompatibility message when opening the app, and the operator itself recommends, as the only solution, buying a newer TV or adding an external streaming device (Chromecast, Fire TV Stick) to keep accessing the service.

It’s an understandable technical decision — maintaining a modern app on hardware more than a decade old is difficult — but it shifts the cost of upgrading onto the customer paying for a subscription service, and it’s consistent with the already-described pattern of an experience that depends heavily on the specific device used to watch the content.

Advertising and perceived value

Another recurring point in user reviews is the presence of advertising within a paid service, which creates friction especially when combined with channels being dropped and replaced by alternatives perceived as lower quality. This combination — paying, ads, and catalog changes — appears repeatedly in the harshest criticism.

Digital customer service

Movistar Plus+ support is integrated with the operator’s other services (fiber, mobile), through chat, phone and the Mi Movistar app. This has unification benefits, but it also means specific support for TV-app problems competes with the overall volume of inquiries across the whole Movistar ecosystem.

Who it makes sense for

If you’re a football and premium-sports fan, and you mainly watch through the official set-top box or a recent smart TV, Movistar Plus+ offers a catalog that’s hard to match in a single service. If your main way of watching is through Android TV, or you’re very sensitive to advertising in a paid service, keep in mind that, according to other users’ reviews, these are the weakest points of the current experience.

Methodology for this audit

This analysis is based on Movistar Plus+‘s public documentation and on user reviews published on the App Store, Google Play and specialized telecommunications media, checked in September 2026. It does not substitute for an actual subscription with continued use across different devices. You can read more about how we work in our editorial methodology.

Best for
  • Football and premium-sports fans who value having the whole offering in one service
  • Users who mainly watch through the official set-top box or a recent smart TV, where the experience tends to be more stable
Not the best fit if
  • Android TV users looking for a polished, actively supported app, based on available reviews
  • Anyone who won't tolerate advertising within a paid service

Content search by title, genre and live-channel lineup, with personalized recommendations within the on-demand catalog.

A page for each movie, series or sports event with synopsis, cast and availability, in line with other streaming platforms.

Subscriptions are handled mainly through Movistar's commercial website, bundled with fiber, mobile and TV packages.

Available on iOS and Android, with live and on-demand playback; reviews are mixed: good for some users, with complaints about picture quality and navigation for others.

Limitation: The Android TV version gets harsher criticism for perceived lack of maintenance, according to user reviews.

Management of profiles and linked devices under the account, with parental controls available.

Support integrated with the rest of Movistar's services (chat, the Mi Movistar app, phone), shared with fiber and mobile support.

Live and on-demand streaming with quality dependent on network coverage and the device used; several users report a better experience on the official set-top box than on third-party device apps.

Limitation: Some users describe ads and drops in picture quality as recurring friction points.

The app is continuously updated to add technical improvements, which in 2026 also meant dropping support for older TVs and players.

Limitation: Since April 2026, specific LG and Samsung Smart TV models made between 2012 and 2015, as well as TVs that don't reach Android TV 6.0, show incompatibility messages when opening the app.

Movistar maintains a community forum where recurring app issues are documented and discussed, an additional support route beyond official service channels.
